What Counts as a Plumbing Emergency?

A plumbing emergency is any situation that poses an immediate risk of water damage, loss of essential services, or health and safety concerns. The following situations all warrant an emergency call-out:

Burst or fractured pipes — A burst pipe can release hundreds of litres of water per hour. If you cannot isolate the water supply at the stopcock, call us immediately. A burst pipe in a wall, ceiling, or floor requires immediate professional attention to prevent structural damage.

Boiler breakdown in cold weather — A boiler failure during winter leaves households without heating or hot water. This is particularly serious for elderly residents, young children, and those with medical conditions. We will prioritise these calls.

Severe or growing leaks — A small leak that is worsening rapidly, is near electrics, or is threatening to break through a ceiling should be treated as an emergency.

Blocked toilet with no alternative facility — A completely blocked toilet in a single-bathroom property is an emergency. We can usually clear toilet blockages rapidly and restore function.

No water supply — Loss of water supply to the property may be caused by a burst on the service pipe or a faulty stop valve.

Gas leak or gas smell — If you smell gas, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 immediately and leave the property. Do not use electrical switches. Once the gas is made safe, call us for the associated plumbing repairs.

What Happens When You Call Our Emergency Line

Our emergency line is answered by a real person 24 hours a day — there is no voicemail, no automated system, and no waiting for a call back. When you ring, we will ask for your address, a brief description of the problem, and confirm an estimated arrival time. We will also give you practical advice on what to do immediately — such as how to find and operate your stopcock — to help limit damage while we are on our way.

On arrival, our engineer will assess the situation quickly, carry out any immediate protective measures, and explain what repair is needed and how long it will take. We provide a transparent price before beginning any work, even in emergency situations. Our engineers are calm, professional, and experienced in managing high-pressure situations — we have seen it all before and know exactly how to handle it.

Transparent Emergency Pricing

We will always quote you a price before beginning emergency work. Our emergency rates are clearly stated and we never exploit a difficult situation. We charge a call-out fee that covers the first attendance and initial assessment, with all subsequent work quoted and agreed before it begins. We accept cash, bank transfer, and major debit and credit cards.

How quickly can you reach me in an emergency in Newcastle?
We aim to reach you within 60 minutes in central Newcastle. Outer areas of Newcastle and the wider Tyne & Wear region may be up to 90 minutes at peak times. We will always give you an honest ETA when you call.
Do you charge more for emergency call-outs at night or on weekends?
Out-of-hours emergency rates apply between 6pm and 8am on weekdays and all day on weekends and bank holidays. We will confirm the applicable rate when you call, before we dispatch an engineer.
What should I do if I can't find my stopcock?
The main stopcock is usually located under the kitchen sink, in a ground floor cupboard near the front of the property, or where the supply pipe enters through the wall. If you genuinely cannot find it, call us immediately and our engineer can talk you through it or arrive and locate it on-site. There is also an external stop tap in the pavement outside your property that can be operated by Northumbrian Water.
